We were asked to cover the final stage of the women’s tour cycling for the main sponsor Friends Life. It meant a trip over to Harwich in Essex for the start of stage 5 then a swift dash over to the finish in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

Olympic and world champion Marianne Vos won the stage & also the 5 stage Tour.  It was a dominant performance to win a hugely successful inaugural Women’s Tour of Britain.

The Dutch rider claimed a third successive stage success on the fifth and final day to seal overall victory in front of large crowds in Bury St Edmunds.

The Rabo-Liv rider, who claimed London 2012 Olympic gold ahead of Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead, won on the concluding 108km stage from Harwich – and with it 10 bonus seconds – to triumph overall by 30 seconds.

“I have won many titles before, and some gold medals, but this women’s Tour is really special because it means so much to women’s cycling,” Vos said afterwards.

Sharon Laws won the “Queen of the mountain” jersey, which is awarded for attaining points during designated ‘climb’ sections during each stage of the event. Her team surprised her on the final day by covering her bike in sticky dots to match her mountain jersey.

I was booked to work as a PR event photographer at the Farnborough Airshow 2014, with the aim of following a Minister for Wales while she visited eight Welsh aviation companies on the Aerospace Wales stand. It’s always tricky following a VIP at an event like this – people get in the way, moments pass quickly, and you have to be poised and ready to get that key shot at a moments notice. Typically I’ll have my Nikon D800 camera ready set up with an ISO of 1600-2000, shutter speed of 1/50 and an aperture of f5.6 which is a pretty good set up for an indoors event like this. I choose the high ish ISO so i can use fill flash & also pick up available light so other parts of the stand don’t look dark & unwelcoming.

Once I’d finished the first part of the job I wanted to take some time for a bit of aviation photography. I especially wanted a shot of Boeing’s Dreamliner being the newest passenger plane on show. It is an incredible sight when unladen soaring and banking hard around the airfield fly zone. I got this fantastic shot of it in a steep climb.

Then there are the fast jets –

and the attack helicopters with time for a wave!

The second part of the job was a drinks reception held high up in what are called the ‘Chalet’s’. It was for those that had a stand earlier in the day & their guests. One attendee was Iron Maiden’s frontman & Cardiff Aviation’s Bruce Dickinson.

The view from the balcony is quite something so i took a panoramic shot on my HTC One M8. For a phone it’s pretty amazing.

We were recently asked by Generate Sponsorship to be their sports photographers at Twickenham Stadium to photograph all the teams playing in a QBE Touch Rugby Tournament. All those playing needed to go home with their team shot mounted in a QBE branded folder. OK. Challenge set.

Tournament starts at 1pm. 13 teams coming out of the tunnel onto the pitch. Two of England’s rugby stars, Mike Catt & Graham Rowntree are present to join the teams & build the atmosphere.

Sports photographers

After the 20-30 minutes it took to round everyone up it was time to print the 127 8 inch x 6 inch prints so all the guests can have them signed & take them home after the Tournament.

There’s never much time for printing so I use my trusty dye sub printers to spit the 8 x 6’s out a fast as they can.

Once mounted they were laid out on tables in the tunnel for guests to collect & have signed by Mike & Graham.

Want to discuss an event with us? We’ll be really happy to answer your questions and give ballpark costs.

There was very little not catered for at the Bryant Park on Friday evening. A brief glance around the room as we walk in shows an immaculately decorated room with places for a minimum of 500 guests. Right now the room is eerily silent, place settings sit waiting for guests and the elaborate sound system is begging for a set. There is a definite sense of the calm before the storm. As we enter the kitchens this feeling is already evident. A team of chefs, waiters and waitresses are already in full flow preparing the array of dishes that will be consumed tonight. We make sure to get a few snaps of the preparations before we are hurried on by a flustered head chef.

By the time the conference ends the Conference Photography team are fully set up and ready to record the events of the evening. Everyone is immaculate in suits and evening wear despite the busy day of meetings and conferences. There is a definite sense of excitement as attendees unwind and the champagne begins to flow. We manage to get a few shots of the elaborate dishes before they are devoured completely, though attempting to delay five hundred hungry guests from a three courses meal is a task which surpasses even our expertise. As the meal ends we arrive at the all-important speeches. This is the crucial moment for our team and we are sure to get as many snaps of the ensuing ceremony as possible. Later these will be cut down to almost a third of those taken but right now it is crucial we don’t miss an opportunity. After the speeches comes the slide show. This has been put together by the Conference Photography team earlier in the week and is now up and ready to go. These slides give a perfect glimpse of the work which has gone into the conference and helps to show the assembled guests what they have achieved. As the slide show ends there is a palpable sense of pride in the room and everyone is ready to celebrate the work that has been achieved.

There is no time to rest for the Conference Photography team though. As the day turns to evening we are capturing images of the various revelries taking place. These images will later be uploaded to the Corporate Event Photography website and linked in to the conferences own website. As the guests continue on into the evening we continue to get as many high-quality images as possible. The atmosphere is incredible and it is this feeling that the Conference Photography team really aims to capture. It is past midnight by the time we are finished but the event has been a huge success. All in a day’s work for the Conference Photography team.

Recently used my Lastolite Hi-Lite 6 x 7 foot background for a shoot at Telefonica up in London. The great thing about the background is that it’s a ‘pop-up’ just like their reflectors making transport much easier without trying to carry a near 9 foot paper roll!

Set up is very easy by letting it ‘spring open’ once out of its carry bag then then bracing each corner with the posts supplied. Each side has a zip so depending on whether you need it landscape or portrait its easy to zip in one or two flash heads.

I use a two head kit so zipped one in on the left side & used the other with a softbox to light my subjects.

One of which was Alex Gregory MBE. One of the coxless four Olympic gold medal winning rowers.

Coxless four Olympic Gold medal rower Alex Gregory

At 6 foot 5″ it was tight making him fit on the 7 foot high background. I’m not short at 6 foot 2″ & don’t need to stand on a box that often!

My last encounter with an Olympic rower was with Sir Steve Redgrave at Wentworth Club. He was playing the 10th hole on the West Course in a corporate golf event & surprised the guests while putting out on the 9th green by using one of his medals as a ball marker!

But my first was with the Gold medal winning Searle brothers, Greg & Jonny along with their cox from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Garry Herbert.

They have all been a pleasure & made a photographers job much easier. Thank you & well done!

For at least the past 10 years I have been lucky enough to have full on course access to all the players at the Golf Championships held at Wentworth Golf Club each May. It’s such an enjoyable experience watching top golfers like Tiger Woods, Luke Donald and Ernie Els play golf up close and I’ve ended up with some great golf shots.

There are some skills needed which are different to regular coporate golf event photography though, not least in trying to predict who is likely to win a few holes before the end so you can make sure you get the most in demand photos.

Last week we provided all the event photography for Reckitt Benkiser at Hampton Court Palace. It was a huge leaving party for their Director who was finally moving on after many years in charge and was a suitably impressive party! Beautiful lighting around Hampton Court Palace provided a spectacular backdrop for the photographs, although the lighting was a challenge, as it often is at a night time event.

However the client was very pleased with the results, a selction of the photos are shown here. Within 3 days of completing the job we had put together a bespoke hard back book of special photographs for him to keep as a memento of his time at Reckitt Benkiser and a framed print for each of his key guests.
